Cloverfield Organic Farm: Preserving Heirloom Crops and Promoting Biodiversity

Updated: Aug 4, 2025

The Importance of Small Family Farms

Small family farms, like Cloverfield Organic Farm, play a vital role in their local communities. They serve several critical needs, including preserving rare heirloom crops that are at risk of disappearing. These farms are essential for maintaining biodiversity and supporting sustainable agriculture.

At Cloverfield Organic Farm, we are dedicated to growing a variety of endangered fruits. These fruits are part of the Ark of Taste, a list maintained by the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity. This organization recognizes the urgent need to support small farms that cultivate these rare crops. The Ark of Taste features traditional heirloom crops that hold significant cultural and dietary importance. Each crop has a rich history and unique flavors that are often unmatched in modern industrial agriculture.

Our Heirloom Crops

At Cloverfield Organic Farm, we grow several endangered fruits listed on the Ark of Taste, including:

  • Spitzenberg Apple

  • Gravenstein Apple

  • Arkansas Black Apple

  • Blenheim Apricot

  • Rio Oso Gem Peach

  • Inca Plum

  • Mariposa Plum

  • Elephant Heart Plum

  • Laroda Plum

These are just a few of the fruits we cultivate. We also have wild native cherry plums in multiple colors. Some of our other fruits may be added to the Ark of Taste in the future, further contributing to the preservation of biodiversity.

Promoting Biodiversity and Regenerative Agriculture

Cloverfield Organic Farm is a model for promoting biodiversity and regenerative agriculture. We are certified organic by both OCIA and the Real Organic Project. Our farming practices focus on nurturing the soil. We grow all our crops in native organically amended soil and under the sun. This approach eliminates the need for pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides.

We protect our crops by maintaining healthy soil rich in microbes and diverse soil life. Additionally, we cultivate many flowers that attract pest predators and pollinators. This natural ecosystem helps ensure the health and vitality of our crops.
