Why Dragonflies Thrive on Our Organic Farm

Every late afternoon, the farm changes character. The air softens, the breezes cool, and a dazzle of dragonflies begins to move over the fields like tiny arrows of light.
They skim the water. They pause on tomato trellises and tall grains. They patrol the same sunny paths between garden beds, then lift and turn so quickly that the eye has to catch up. Their presence is beautiful, but it is more than decoration. Dragonflies tell a quiet story about the health of a place.
On our organic farm, they thrive because the conditions that support them are the same conditions we work to protect every day: healthy water, diverse insect life, and fields free from synthetic pesticides.

Dragonflies are more than a pretty sight
Dragonflies are among the most noticeable insects on a farm because they are active, colorful, and fast. They are also skilled hunters. Adult dragonflies feed on mosquitoes, gnats, midges, flies, and other small insects. They catch prey in the air with remarkable precision, often while flying at high speed.
That feeding behavior makes them welcome farm neighbors. They help keep some flying insect populations in balance without any need for sprays. They are not a complete pest control plan, and they do not distinguish between every insect a farmer might label “good” or “bad.” Nature is more complex than that. Still, their presence adds another layer to the farm’s living checks and balances.
What makes dragonflies especially interesting is that their lives are split between water and air.
Before a dragonfly ever flashes across our farm, it spends much of its life underwater as a nymph. Dragonfly nymphs live in ponds, wetlands, slow streams, ditches, and other pristine aquatic habitats. They feed there, grow there, and depend on those watery places for shelter and oxygen.
That means adult dragonflies are connected to more than the condition of the air above the farm. They are connected to the health of the fresh water all around it.
When dragonflies return year after year, they are not just visiting the farm. They are using it as habitat.
That is why we pay attention when they appear in numbers. A late-afternoon dazzle does not replace water testing or careful observation, but it does offer a living clue. Something in the farm system is working.
Healthy water gives dragonflies their start
Dragonflies need clean oxygenated water sources, such as ponds or slow-flowing streams. Our farm is close to, and is a seasonal tributary to, San Pablo creek. Female dragonflies lay eggs in or near water, depending on the species. Some place eggs directly into aquatic plants. Others drop them onto the water surface or damp soil nearby. Once the young hatch, the nymphs must survive underwater until they are ready to emerge.
Clean, oxygen-rich water matters because nymphs are aquatic predators. They need habitat that supports prey, cover, and stable conditions. Water that is heavily polluted, stripped of plant life, or exposed to chemical runoff is less likely to support a strong dragonfly community.
On an organic farm, protecting water starts with everyday choices.
We keep soil covered as much as possible so heavy rain does not carry bare earth into the creek. We welcome vegetation along water edges because roots help hold soil in place. We use no synthetic pesticides, which reduces the risk that harmful residues will wash into aquatic areas.
The farm watershed is not treated as an isolated feature. It is part of the whole farm.
When rain falls on a field, it moves through soil, roots, plant residue, and low areas before it reaches water. Every step along that path matters. Healthy soil acts more like a sponge than a hard surface. Plant diversity slows runoff. Grasses and wild edges catch sediment. All of this helps create the kind of water life dragonflies depend on.

Diverse insects help keep the farm alive
A farm without insects may look tidy, but it is not truly healthy. Insects pollinate flowers, break down organic matter, feed birds and bats, and serve as prey for other creatures. Some insects damage crops, but many more play useful roles that are easy to miss.
Dragonflies need insect diversity because adults feed on small flying insects. If the air is empty, dragonflies will not stay long. A farm that supports many forms of insect life often gives dragonflies enough food to patrol the same areas day after day.
That does not happen by accident.
Diverse insect life grows out of diverse habitat. On our farm, that means a mix of cultivated beds, flowering plants, grassy margins, hedgerows, compost areas, mulch, and undisturbed corners. Each area offers something different.
Some insects need flowers. Some need leaf litter. Some need damp soil. Some need hollow stems. Some need host plants for their young. When the farm includes more than crop rows, it becomes a place where many species can complete their life cycles.
Dragonflies benefit from that richness, but so does the farm as a whole.
A healthy mix of insects can support:
Pollination
Bees, flies, beetles, butterflies, and other insects help many crops and wild plants set fruit and seed.
Natural pest balance
Predators and parasitoids can help keep certain pest populations from building unchecked.
Soil renewal
Insects and other small creatures help break down plant matter and move nutrients through the soil.
Food for wildlife
Birds, frogs, bats, spiders, and dragonflies all rely on insects in different ways.
Dragonflies fit into this web as both predator and prey. They hunt midair, but birds may hunt them. Their nymphs eat aquatic prey, but larger aquatic animals may eat the nymphs. Each relationship adds another thread of resilience.
A late-afternoon swarm, or dazzle, is a sign that the farm has not been simplified into silence.
No pesticides means fewer hidden costs
One of the clearest reasons dragonflies thrive here is also one of the simplest: we do not use synthetic pesticides.
Pesticides are designed to kill or disrupt living organisms. Some target specific pests more closely than others, but broad use can affect creatures far beyond the intended target. Insects may be exposed directly on leaves and flowers, or indirectly through water, soil, and prey.
For dragonflies, the risks can show up in several places.
The aquatic nymphs may be exposed if chemicals move into ponds, ditches, streams, or other wet areas. Adult dragonflies may feed on insects that have contacted treated surfaces. The larger insect community may shrink, which reduces their food supply.
Avoiding synthetic pesticides does not mean doing nothing. Organic farming requires close observation, timing, prevention, and patience. It means building conditions that make crop problems less likely to surge out of control.
That work can include:
Rotating crops so pests and diseases do not build up in the same place year after year
Building healthy soil with compost and cover crops
Choosing crop varieties suited to the region and season
Encouraging beneficial insects with flowers and habitat
Using physical barriers, hand removal, or targeted organic methods when needed
Accepting that a living farm will never be spotless
A few chewed leaves are not failure. They can be evidence that the farm is part of a food web.

Our goal is not to control every insect. Rather, our goal is to grow food inside a balanced living system. Dragonflies remind us that restraint has value. By not reaching first for chemical control, our farm leaves room for natural relationships to do some of the work.
Late afternoon brings the dazzle
Anyone who spends enough time outside starts to notice rhythms. Some flowers open in the morning. Bees change their activity with temperature and light. Birds grow quieter in the heat, then move again near evening.
Dragonflies have rhythms too.
On many warm days, late afternoon brings ideal conditions. The sun is lower but still strong enough to warm wings and open flying space. Small insects often gather in the softer light. Air over paths, orchards, and garden bed margins can become busy with prey. Dragonflies take advantage of that window.
That is when we see them most clearly.
They patrol along the same stretches of garden beds, often returning to favorite perches. Some hover over the orchard. Others move over the brambles where gnats and small flies rise from the greenery. Their flight looks playful, but much of it is purposeful. They are hunting, guarding territory, searching for mates, or moving between water and feeding areas.
The word “dazzle” feels right because the experience is partly visual. Wings catch the sun. Bodies flash blue, green, amber, or red. Movement comes from every angle, then disappears, then appears again.
Still, what matters most is not the spectacle. It is the pattern.
One dragonfly passing through is a visitor. A regular late-day gathering suggests habitat. It means the farm offers water, food, shelter, warmth, and enough safety for dragonflies to come back.
Indicator species offer clues, not guarantees
Dragonflies are often described as indicator species because their presence can reflect environmental conditions, especially around water. Since they rely on aquatic habitat as young and terrestrial habitat as adults, they connect two worlds that are easy to treat separately.
That makes them useful observers of a place.
If dragonflies are abundant and varied, it may suggest that nearby water supports aquatic life and that surrounding land offers enough insects and cover. If they suddenly disappear from a place where they were once common, that change may raise questions.
Did water quality shift? Was vegetation removed? Did pesticide use increase nearby? Did drought reduce breeding habitat? Did the insect food supply change?
These questions matter.
At the same time, dragonflies are not a perfect measuring tool. Weather, season, migration, water levels, and species behavior all affect what we see. Some dragonflies travel widely. Others are more tied to specific habitat. A single afternoon cannot tell the whole story.
The real value comes from watching over time.
We notice when they first appear in the season. We notice which areas they use. We notice whether they return after rain, heat, or harvest. That kind of observation builds a relationship with the farm that no spreadsheet can replace.
It also keeps us humble. The dragonflies do not arrive because of one decision. They arrive because many small decisions add up.
What we do for dragonflies also helps the whole farm
The best thing about dragonfly habitat is that it does not serve dragonflies alone. The same choices that support them also support soil, crops, pollinators, birds, frogs, birds, and the long-term health of the farm.
Healthy water helps amphibians and aquatic insects. Flowering plants help pollinators and predatory insects. No synthetic pesticides means fewer risks for non-target species. Covered soil protects roots and reduces erosion. Wild edges create shelter where life can persist between growing seasons.
These are not separate projects. They are parts of one farm ethic.
We want our farm to produce food, but we also want it to stay alive in the deeper sense. That means leaving space for creatures that do not appear on a harvest list. It means measuring success not only by yield, but also by the return of finches, frogs calling after rain, bees on squash blossoms, and dragonflies rising at day’s end.

A farm is never finished. It changes with weather, seasons, plantings, and the choices made each day. The dragonflies help us read those changes. They show us where water still holds life. They show us that insects remain abundant. They show us that refusing synthetic pesticides can make room for beauty with a purpose.
When the late-afternoon dazzle arrives, we stop for a moment. Not because the work is done, but because the work is visible in another form.
The dragonflies are not ours to claim. They are free, wild, and temporary. But when they choose the farm again and again, they offer a clear message: keep the water clean, keep the habitat varied, keep the chemicals out, and life will find its way in. Dragonflies may be our true garden-fairy guardians.
