October is a great month to come visit our farm and nursery to pick up potted edible plants to grow in your own garden. At Cloverfield Organic Farm we have many potted edibles to offer in our nursery, and all of them are certified organic. In the farm garden beds we are switching from summer vegetables to our cool-season winter crops. Throughout this month we will be harvesting the last of the tomatoes, squashes, peppers, and amaranth grain. We will be planting peas, carrots, lettuce, cabbages, fenugreek, spinach, broccoli, mustard, beets, and kale. Towards the end of October we plant garlic cloves and you can come help with this fun task.

Fall is also a beautiful season to come visit the farm and u-pick fresh organic produce right from the garden beds and orchards. This is the season to u-pick pomegranates, elderberries, early persimmons, and figs; as well as tomatoes, tomatillos, and peppers. There might still be a few cucumbers. If that isn't enough, there will be several herbs, including lemon verbena, lemon balm, four different mints, thyme, rosemary, sheep sorrel, absinthe wormwood, oregano, catnip, rau ram, Thai lime leaves, California bay laurel, and ginger & horseradish roots. Leafy greens such as collards, lettuce, red-veined sorrel, Malabar spinach, Swiss chard, pac choy, and kale should be plentiful. Rhubarb stalks will be ready to harvest in October as well. There may even be some colorful beets and radishes.

Organic flowers to u-pick in October include yarrow, wild asters, cosmos, zinnias, hollyhocks, and marigolds - all of which are edible.

Our nursery is well stocked with a number of perennial edible organic potted plants, including fig trees, grape vines, bababerries, autumn berries, red currants, strawberries, comfrey, milkweed, hops, artichokes, anise hyssop, rhubarb, chives, chocolate mint, strawberry mint, orange mint, apple mint, Inca lilies, sage, and more.

Every single week of the year, we are seeding and transplanting new crops into our densely planted garden beds. We grow everything in healthy, organic-rich soil, under the sun, without any synthetic inputs or any toxic 'cides'.

We will be holding our next Fall Organic Farming Workshop, a seasonal volunteer day, on Thursday, October 29. We welcome volunteers to come give us a hand and learn about the seasonal chores that keep our farm productive year-round. We plan to focus on planting garlic and seeding cover crop during this event. Please wear sturdy shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. If you have them, also wear your gardening gloves. We will supply all instructions and tools, and light snacks and water will be provided. All ages and abilities are invited. The hours will be from 11 am to 2 pm. If you wish to come volunteer, please email us at cloverfield@gmail.com

In our farm shed, we offer a taste of our raw unfiltered honey, and you can purchase jars of the honey. We also have packages of our organic dried herbs and a few organic seeds.

We are open for farm visitors and public u-picking every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from noon to five. We are located at 501 La Paloma Rd., El Sobrante, California, 94803. There is no entry fee during our regular open hours and we have free parking. You pay for what you pick or purchase at the end of your visit. Each bunch is $6.

Private tours, group visits, picnics, parties, horse interactions, and other fun events can be booked and paid for on our website.
